Counting

Here are a couple of cute photos of Otto counting his rock collection with Grandma Joan.
I've heard him count as high as six correctly, but usually it's "one, two, fee, four, six, fee, one, two, fee..."  Cute!

Baking Cookies with Mommy

While being stuck in the house during the snow storm in Dec. Otto and I made 8 batches of cookies.  He loved measuring and mixing and for the most part was fun and helpful.  (I still have frosting stuck on the ceiling from one of our mishaps.)
Otto learned to lick the beaters at Thanksgiving, so he's a pro now.
Some dough fell on the floor, so...
of course it couldn't go to waste.
I know that's really gross, but it was just too funny.  The things kids can get away with are incredible.  Can you imagine an adult doing this???
Here's another cute one from a different day.  Who bakes in their undies?  Answer: Otto.  (Check out the cute German slippers from Grandma Kathee and Opa.)

Dumped On - December 2008

So again this is a month late, but we had so much fun being stuck in the house and playing in the snow.  I really wanted to share these photos!
Sledding down Bangor St. in our neighborhood.
"Helping" Daddy shovel snow.
Yeah right, some help.
Gotta stop for a water break.

Christmas 2008

I realize it is nearing the end of January 2009 and I'm posting about "last" Christmas, but alas I want Otto to have a record of not only how delinquent his mother is but of his life.

So, Christmas 2008 was delightful.  We enjoyed Christmas Eve in Olympia with my family, Grandpa Ron, Grandma Joan, Uncle Jason, Aunt Lisa and Cousin Lauren.  We sadly missed my grandmother this year as she was snowed in in Wenatchee.  We had a fun afternoon and evening with playing and dinner.  Otto and I went out into their backyard and scouted for deer.  We came upon three that quickly hopped away.  We also enjoyed all the snow and the beautiful Christmas lights that Grandpa Ron spent so much time putting up.

Here are some photos of our time with them:
We woke Christmas morning in our cozy house and found that Santa had visited while we were asleep.  Otto's morning began with lots of chocolate from his stocking and countless presents from Santa and family.
Later in the day we made our way over to Kirkland to visit Grandma Kathee and Opa where we feasted on duck and unwrapped more fun presents.  This year Auntie Jessica couldn't join us because she was visiting Tracie's family in Texas.  We missed her, but enjoyed playing with her dog Diego and eating her share of the Christmas cookies. : )

Here is a photo of our time with them:
Christmas this year felt unusual.  I think the amount of snowfall made it difficult to be with more family and the economy made spending money of gifts feel uncomfortable.  We are so thankful and feel extremely fortunate for all that we have.

Tooth Attack

Otto's mommy left out a couple of Otto's developmental milestones. Did anyone notice the large forehead gash in our Christmas picture? It has finally healed and was originally caused by running straight into a corner in pursuit of his best friend Owen (you'll git 'em next time, Otto).

The other finding I'd like to point out are the two small, linear poke-holes under his bottom lip. These are also a unique milestone, the first full-thickness injury. Otto was apparently staring out the window over a low windowsill and slipped, hit is head and then rocked forward such that his lower lip had two front teeth travel from inside to out. Kerry was stuck at home in the snow, and after some wonderful email photos we elected to treat him conservatively at home.
He looks great already!

I suppose like father like son, I had received stitches 5 times in my face before I was a teen. Lets hope we can slow this down. ;)

Happy 2nd Birthday Otto

Wow! Otto turned two yesterday and I can't believe he's growing up so fast. It's amazing to think that just two years ago he was born. Andrew and I are so proud of how Otto is growing up and what kind of little person he is becoming.
We had a wonderful celebration last Sunday, which I'll add pictures from later. Yesterday we took him out to one of our favorite restaurants and then came home for a large slice of left over birthday cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream (candles and singing included, of course).
We visit the doctor next week for his two year well child check so after that I'll be able to talk more about his stats. For now though, Otto is talking more and more. He regularly strings 3-5 words together. It's fun being able to communicate with him at a higher level now. Although, today I felt sad as I was listening to him talk in the backseat on the way home from the grocery store. Soon he'll be caring on lengthier conversations and never again will he have short simple sentences. I thought to myself that I should video record him talking because it will never be the same and for now it's so precious.
Otto is beginning to play independently for longer periods of time. Partly in thanks to his musical and motion train engine and caboose, which he got for Christmas this year. He also likes to make circles with the play dough by pushing it through a particular toy that came with the play dough set.
Otto's beginning to take more interest in unzipping his coat and taking it off. He also is more interested in taking his shoes off by himself and loves to pull his socks off by himself. He helps get dressed by pushing his arms through the sleeves and holding up each leg for his pants. He sometimes is interested in picking out his clothes, but generally doesn't have much interest yet (good).
Otto has become a tooth brushing star. He sits on my lap and opens his mouth while I brush his teeth every night. Morning brushing is up to him and it includes a lot of toothbrush chewing and not so much brushing for now.
Otto is a great sleeper. He goes to bed around 8pm every night and lays in bed with his musical aquarium playing until he falls asleep. This is of course after we've read him a few books. His naps are generally 2.5 hours long between 12:30 and 4pm. He most often falls asleep in the car on the way home from Karen and Owen's after my workday ends.
Otto's favorite toy is still his "roar roar," a stuffed lion. He got a new smaller version for his birthday and calls it "grandma roar roar."
There is no interest in sight for potty training although he is aware of what happens and knows it's supposed to end up in the toilet. We're not pushing the subject because it's very clear that this is something that will happen on Otto's time.
I'm sure I'm overlooking may important milestones, but for now these are the important landmarks at the end of Otto's second year. We're excited about what year three will bring in the life of our little Otto.
