Delicious Ecuadorian Finger Puppets
Thank you Uncle Brian and Aunt Cate for my birthday finger puppets from Ecuador (the country in which I was conceived). I especially love to take a bite out of each one and throw them. Any guesses on which ones are my favorites?Life With a Rascal
Life is really good these days. We love our little Otto so much and laugh hysterically several times every day at his antics. He has been sick...the never ending virus...the last few weeks, so it was a reprieve today to see Otto back to his old self...up to no good!
Here he is trying to stand on the kitchen garbage can, which he carted all around the kitchen and living room just after I had emptied it. He was entertained for probably a half hour (Yes, he actually played...BY HIMSELF! : ).
After an unsuccessful attempt at standing on the garbage can Otto turned to the empty diaper box. The goof ball decided he would dance on top the box. You can see the pride in his expression at his glorious new discovery. Let's break out the disco ball. This kid loves being on stage.

A Weekend in California with Aunt Adrienne
We had a fabulous weekend staying with our friend and Otto's Aunt Adrienne in San Fransisco. She even stocked her kitchen with all of Otto's favorites.
Otto loved imitating his Aunt Adrienne as they did some serious pucker practicing.
He especially loved early morning pajama time when he got to plan out the daily activities with Aunt Adrienne.
The first day they decided that we should go to Pt. Reyes National Seashore to see the elephant seals. So, we took a beautiful drive up the coast to the beach.
Once we got there there was plenty of time to explore the beach before we caught the shuttle bus which took us to where we could hike out and see the elephant seals. Otto loved squishing the sand between his fingers and picking up smooth rocks.
He loved strolling the beach and exploring. Notice he's walking now. Separation anxiety... never heard of it. Otto seems confident that someone who loves him will always be there.
From Otto's expression you can see his delight at such a beautiful place. We're very glad he's a nature boy!
So, here they are in all their glory...the stinky, loud elephant seals. We learned that they can dive up to 5,000 feet deep and stay underwater for up to 1 hour. They have arrived on the coast line to give birth, which we got to witness.
The second day we took a stroll along the coast just down the hill from Aunt Adrienne's house. Aunt Adrienne didn't join us for this one because she was running a 10 mile training run. You go girl!
After the run and stroll Aunt Adrienne took us to a beautiful market at the old ferry terminal on the waterfront. Here I'm introducing Otto to the most disgusting fungi on the planet. Some people refer to them as mushrooms, but they are just plain disgusting to me.The weather all weekend was beautiful and we had a really fun vacation and visit! Thank you Adrienne for hosting us and our bobbling toddler all weekend!
Two New Milestones
With all the hub-bub of Otto's first birthday I neglected to share with everyone that he's now walking. He had been trying for a few weeks, but hadn't seemed to be making much progress (forward, anyway). Then on Thursday, Jan. 10th in the evening in his bedroom he just took off across the room to his toy basket. It's made him a whole lot happier and now crawling, anywhere, is rare.
His second new milestone came last Thursday, Jan. 17th after spending the morning with Daddy. I came home and Andrew told me that Otto learned to say a new word..."tickle." At first I didn't believe him because as a literacy specialist I know the /t/ and /k/ sounds are more difficult to produce. It's the cutest thing to hear! When Andrew took him swimming that night Otto was patting his belly saying "tickle, tickle, tickle."
I've captured both of these feats on video, but have yet to have accomplished the feat myself of learning how to download them. So, these videos are forthcoming.

Otto's First Birthday
Happy Birthday Otto!
We had a wonderful birthday party yesterday afternoon and want to thank everyone who came for making it so special for Otto.

Otto Goes Sledding
While on our vacation to Lake Wenatchee we took a drive along Icicle Creek to Leavenworth. Leavenworth was blanketed with snow and all decorated with lights for the holidays. It was beautiful.
In Leavenworth Otto went sledding for the first time. Opa and Grandma Kathee gave him this cool sled for Christmas and Otto was all the envy of the other kids on the sledding hill. A few people asked where we had gotten it (LL Bean online). After going down the hill solo a couple times we each took a few turns on an adult size sled holding Otto in our laps. We all felt like little kids again laughing and squealing at the thrill of speeding down the hill on our butts. Otto seemed to have a good time too, although he was pretty quiet, just taking it all in.

Otto Goes Snowshoeing
We just returned from a family vacation with Opa, Grandma Kathee and Aunt Jessica where we stayed in a beautiful house on Lake Wenatchee. Instead of exchanging Christmas presents with them this year Grandma Kathee suggested we all go on a family vacation together. We rented a big house on Lake Wenatchee and stayed three nights.
During our vacation Otto went on his first snowshoeing trip. We bundled him up and hitched him to Daddy's back via his backpack. Off we went trudging through the serene trails at the Lake Wentachee state park. We hiked about 45 minutes and stopped so Otto could have a meal. Then we turned around and headed back. Otto was really tired and had trouble falling asleep while wobbling to and fro in the backpack, so Daddy had to endure Otto's wails for the next half hour until we reached the parking lot.
Overall, it was a beautiful trip and I think Otto will be up for another outing in the near future. P.S. Thank you Grandma Joan for the adorable lavender snow suit for Otto. He was cute as a bug and roasty toasty!

Legos With Opa
Otto loves his new Lego set that he got for Christmas from his Aunt Jessica. Daddy taught him how to take the Legos apart, so Opa builds a tower and Otto deconstructs it.
